What to expect at your first facial
A facial is the least intimidating thing on any esthetics menu, and most of the uncertainty is just not knowing the sequence. Here is the whole appointment.
The consultation
Before anything touches your face, you will be asked what your skin does — whether it is dry, oily, reactive, breaking out — what you currently use, and whether you are on anything like a retinoid or Accutane. This is not small talk; it determines what products get used on you.
Say if you have sensitivities, if you are pregnant, or if you have a reaction to anything. Say if you have an event coming up, because it changes whether extractions are a good idea that day.
The treatment, in order
- Deep cleanse — makeup and surface grime off, usually twice.
- Skin analysis, often under a light, to see what is actually going on rather than what it looks like at a glance.
- Exfoliation or a mask, chosen for your skin rather than a fixed protocol.
- Extractions, if needed and if your skin can take them that day. This is the only part that is briefly uncomfortable — a firm pressure, not pain.
- Facial massage — the part everyone remembers.
- Moisturiser and sunscreen to finish.
The Relaxation Luxe Facial ($65, 50% deposit) is exactly this sequence. The Glow Facial ($120, 50% deposit) opens with dermaplaning before the cleanse and includes deep hydration.
What it feels like
Warm, quiet and slow. Most people describe it as the most relaxing hour they have had in a while, and falling asleep is extremely common and completely fine.
Extractions are the exception — firm pressure around congested pores, brief, and your esthetician will stop if you ask.
Afterward
- Some pinkness is normal, especially after extractions. It settles within hours.
- Skip makeup for the rest of the day if you can — pores are open and skin is doing its thing.
- No retinol or acids for two to three days.
- No sun without sunscreen. This one is not optional after any exfoliating treatment.
- A few surface spots in the following days can happen after a first facial — congestion surfacing faster than it would have. It settles.
Ask for your routine
Before you leave, ask what you should be using at home. A facial is a reset; the routine is what holds it. Getting a straight answer about your specific skin — rather than a product list you did not ask for — is genuinely half the value of the appointment.
Quick answers
What happens at your first facial?
A consultation about your skin and products, then a double cleanse, skin analysis, exfoliation or a mask, extractions if appropriate, facial massage, and moisturiser plus sunscreen to finish.
Do facials hurt?
No, apart from extractions, which feel like brief firm pressure around congested pores. Everything else is warm and relaxing, and falling asleep is common.
What should you not do after a facial?
Avoid makeup for the rest of the day, skip retinol and acids for two to three days, and do not go into the sun without sunscreen. Some pinkness and a few surface spots in the following days are normal.
Should I get a facial before a wedding or event?
Yes, but book one to two weeks ahead rather than the day before, and make sure it is not your first-ever facial — you want to know how your skin responds before an important date.
