Matching the skin turnover cycle

How often should you get a facial?

Every four to six weeks for most people. That is not an arbitrary number — it is roughly how long it takes skin to complete a full cell turnover cycle, which is the window a professional treatment is designed to work with.

The four-to-six-week rule

Skin replaces its outer layer on a cycle of about a month, slowing with age. A facial that exfoliates, extracts and rehydrates is most useful at the point where a fresh layer has arrived and the old one is ready to go.

Going more often than every three weeks does not accelerate anything — it interrupts the barrier before it has recovered. Going every six months means every appointment is spent undoing accumulated congestion instead of building on the last one.

When to go more often

  • Congestion or persistent blackheads — every three to four weeks for a stretch, then settle into the normal rhythm.
  • Oily skin, which turns over faster.
  • The first few months of a new routine, when you are actively correcting something.

When to go less often

  • Dry or reactive skin, where over-exfoliating is a bigger risk than under-treating.
  • Mature skin, where turnover naturally slows.
  • If you are already using strong actives at home — retinoids or acids — every six to eight weeks is often plenty.

Timing around an event

Book one to two weeks out, not the day before. Extractions can leave marks that need a few days, and any purging happens in the first several days. A dermaplaning treatment is the exception — it is the one that looks its best almost immediately, and two to three days ahead is fine.

If it is your first facial and there is a wedding or a shoot involved, do not make the event appointment your first one. Book one well ahead so you know how your skin responds.

The part that matters more than frequency

What you do at home between appointments does the majority of the work. A facial every four weeks with no home routine will always underperform a facial every eight weeks with a consistent one. Ask for a routine at your appointment — being told what to actually use is half of what you are paying for.

Quick answers

How often should you get a facial?

Every four to six weeks for most skin, which matches the roughly month-long skin cell turnover cycle. Oily or congested skin can go every three to four weeks; dry, reactive or mature skin often does better at six to eight.

Can you get facials too often?

Yes. More frequently than every three weeks does not give the skin barrier time to recover between treatments, which can leave skin sensitised rather than improved.

How long before an event should I get a facial?

One to two weeks for a treatment involving extractions, since marks and purging need a few days to settle. A dermaplaning treatment can be done two to three days beforehand.

Do facials actually work?

They help most when paired with a consistent home routine. Professional treatment handles what you cannot do at home — extractions, deeper exfoliation, professional-grade products — but what you use daily between appointments does the majority of the work.
